What to know: Coach David Kniffin won’t have a lot of time to make adjustments for the home-and-home series finale against No. 1/1 Long Beach State after No. 4/4 UC Irvine had its worst offensive performance of the season. The Anteaters had a season-low .197 attack percentage in a five-game road loss to the 49ers on Friday, including hitting .167 in the decisive fifth game. Both UC Irvine and 49ers entered this conference series with two of the nation’s top five offenses. Long Beach State had a nation-best .409 attack percentage, while UC Irvine was fourth in the nation hitting .343 and before the loss had at least a .300 attack percentage in 12 of its last 15 matches. Despite the series-opening loss, outside attacker Aaron Koubi finished with a team-high 21 kills on a .410 attack percentage. Koubi, though, was the only Anteater to have more than 10 kills against the 49ers. All-American outside attacker TJ DeFalco in the series opener led all players with both five aces and 22 kills. This was the second time this season that DeFalco had at least 20 kills against a top-five nationally ranked team. The 2017 National Player of the Year also began the weekend fourth in the country hitting .417 and among the nation’s top 20 averaging 3.49 kills per game. Long Beach State remains the only undefeated team in the nation and has dropped a combined six games the entire season, including the two games versus UC Irvine on Friday. If you the 49ers defeat the second-place Anteaters again, they can expand their first-place lead in the Big West to three matches. It also would be two wins away from clinching the inaugural Big West regular season championship and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
