U.S. offense overpowers Panama in U19 NORCECA opener

The offense was more than ready for the United States to open the U19 NORCECA Continental Championship.

The United States committed two attack errors and finished with a .609 attack percentage as it swept Panama 25-19, 25-9, 25-11 in its pool-play opener on Tuesday in Canada.

Setter Chase Wallin in the opening game guided the offense to a .647 attack percentage, and the team did not commit its first attack error until late in the game. The United States also hit a match-best .789 and did not commit an error in the third game to complete the sweep.

Outside attacker Jimmie Chrusfield III finished with a team-high eight kills and zero errors on a .727 attack percentage, including having five kills in the second game. Outside attacker Daniel Hornyak added eight kills, while opposite Bryce Thistlethwaite had six kills.

Along with the offensive performance, Thistlethwaite led all players with two blocks.

The United States limited Panama to a .074 attack percentage in the opener of this U19 World Championship qualification tournament.

Pin-hitter Wen Artwr Downer Dixon in the loss had a match-high 10 kills. Downer Dixon, though, was one of two Panama players to have more than two kills against the United States.

The United States with this victory moves into a tie with the Dominican Republic for first place in its pool. The two teams will meet Wednesday in their second of three pool-play matches.

The Dominican Republic swept Puerto Rico in its pool-play opener on Tuesday.
