EIVA expands conference tournament to six teams starting in 2022

The postseason is expanding for the EIVA.

The EIVA announced it will expand its conference tournament from four to six teams starting in the 2022 season.

This is the first permanent change to the EIVA Tournament format since 2012 when the conference reduced its postseason field to four teams. The conference in 2021 because the reduced number of teams playing in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic decided to include all six teams in the tournament for that one season.

The postseason expansion coincides with Princeton and Harvard slated to return after opting out of last season. St. Francis Brooklyn also will join the EIVA in 2022 to increase the conference to nine teams.

The new EIVA Tournament will feature three rounds with the top-two seeds earning byes to the semifinals. The last four teams to make the conference will compete in the opening round with the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed.

The EIVA regular season champion under the new format will continue to earn the right to play host to the entire four-day conference tournament. The opening round for the upcoming season will take place Wednesday, April 20 with the semifinals on Thursday, April 21 and the finals on Saturday, April 23.

The winner of the EIVA Tournament will receive the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
