Two NJIT players will represent Spain at a marquee European tournament this summer.

Outside attacker Alvaro Gimeno and middle attacker Martin de Chavarria were selected to the Spanish Men’s National Team roster for the CEV European Golden League.

Gimeno rejoins Spain’s top national team after earning First-Team All-EIVA honors with the Highlanders. The outside attacker finished his sophomore season fourth in the EIVA with a 3.31 kills per game average and had a conference-best 0.44 aces per game average.

Along with leading the NJIT offense, Gimeno led the Spanish Men’s Junior National Team last year to within one match of reaching the CEV U20 European Championship Final Round. He also concluded tournament’s third round leading all players with a 4.45 kills per game average.

Chavarria, a 6-foot-5 middle attacker, committed to NJIT and will join the Highlanders for the 2020 season. In addition, Chavarria has played in more than 40 matches with the Spanish Men’s Junior National Team and has won three Spanish League championships.

Both Gimeno and Chavarria are two of the youngest players on the 22-person Spanish roster for the European Golden League.

The European Golden League is a seven-week event that features the top 12 European nations not participating in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Spain finished the 2018 tournament in ninth place.

Spain will play the defending tournament championship Estonia in its opener on Saturday.
