The Bruins in a span of seven days went from being undefeated in the MPSF and in first place to being injured and on a three-match losing streak. However, UCLA still has a chance to salvage the final match of its season-long four-match road trip as it travels to No. 9/10 Pepperdine. The Bruins have been without multiple All-American starters during the recent losing streak. All-American outside attacker Jake Arnitz missed the last three matches with injury. In addition, All-American middle attacker Mitch Stahl returned to the court in a five-game loss to No. 8/9 Stanford on Thursday after not playing in the team’s two losses to No. 2/3 BYU last week. Despite the upset loss to the Cardinal, the Bruins finished with a .333 attack percentage — the eighth time in UCLA’s nine MPSF matches this season it hit more than .300. UCLA running a 6-2 offense with Micah Ma’a and Hagen Smith at splitting time at setter entered the weekend fourth in the nation with a .339 attack percentage. Outside attacker JT Hatch also has double-digit kills in four of the last five matches, including a season-high 19 kills against Stanford. UCLA in the loss to Stanford committed a season-high 29 service errors and has at least 15 service errors in each of the last three matches. Pepperdine setter Joshua Stewart guided the offense to a .386 attack percentage in a four-game comeback victory against No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday. All-conference David Wieczorek in the victory had a match-high 20 kills and committed zero attack errors to hit .488. Wieczorek is among the national leaders with both a 3.97 kills per game average and a .406 attack percentage. In addition, middle attacker Mitch Penning is fourth in the nation with a .481 attack percentage. He also contributed 14 kills and no attack errors against the Gauchos.
