What to know: It’s unprecedented for No. 14 CSUN in its 40-year program history to have a December regular season match. It’s almost fitting the Matadors’ season would start this way given the chance they have to buck several trends in 2017. CSUN will play a home non-conference match versus Concordia-Irvine as it eyes at the end of the season making a return to the postseason. The Matadors ended last season in ninth place in the MPSF and narrowly missed the eight-team MPSF Tournament for the fourth consecutive years. However, CSUN returns a majority of starters, including 2016 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshman All-American outside attacker Dimitar Kalchev. Kalchev along with a 3.04 kills per game average last season, was a finalist for the National Server of the Year after having a 0.45 aces per game average — third-best in the nation. In addition, outside attacker Jakub Ciesla returns to the Matadors’ starting lineup after being seventh in the MPSF last season with a 3.24 kills per game average. Concordia-Irvine suffered a three-game home loss to No. 8 UC Irvine in its season-opener on Thursday, including losing a 26-point overtime in the first game. Middle attacker Hunter Howell in the loss finished with a match-high 11 kills. Opposite Joseph Pillon coming off the bench also added six kills and a team-high four blocks. The Eagles enter this non-conference match 0-2 all-time versus the Matadors with their last meeting occurring in 2013. This will be the first of five non-conference matches that CSUN will play in a nine-day stretch to open the season. The Matadors last season won four non-conference matches in the opening week and went on a seven-match winning streak to begin the season.
