What to know: No. 1/1 Long Beach State for the first time this season will leave Southern California as it opens a two-match conference road series against No. 7/7 Hawai’i. The 49ers are on a conference-best seven-match winning streak and received all but three combined first-place votes in both the national coaches poll and national media poll this week. Freshman outside attacker TJ DeFalco has double-digit kills in 13 matches so far this season and is second in the MPSF with 4.31 kills per game average. He also is in the top five of the MPSF averaging 2.11 digs per game. Along with DeFalco, freshman setter Josh Tuaniga leads the conference with an 11.18 assists per game average, while freshman outside attacker Kyle Ensing is among the MPSF leaders with a 2.16 digs per game average. Hawai’i returns home after losing three of four matches on its recent road trip, including a five-game loss to USC last week. The Rainbow Warriors, though, are the only team to have multiple players in the top 10 of the MPSF for kills. All-American outside attacker Sinisa Zarkovic leads Hawai’i with a 4.00 kills per game average and freshman outside attacker Stijn van Tilburg is seventh in the MPSF averaging 3.53 kills per game. This will also be the first meeting between 49ers and Rainbow Warriors since Hawai’i defeated Long Beach State in the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals last season.
