What to know: All it is going to take for No. 1 Hawai’i to win the MPSF regular season championship is break a road losing streak stretching back more than a decade. The Rainbow Warriors enter their two-match series against the Cougars on an 11-match road loss to BYU and have not won at Smith Fieldhouse since 2003. Hawai’i this season, though, is on a nation-best 16-match winning streak and is in first place in the MPSF with a half-match lead on second-place No. 4 UC Irvine. In addition, the Rainbow Warriors will likely need to sweep the regular season finale series against BYU to clinch the No. 1 seed and home court advantage for the upcoming conference tournament. Opposite Brook Sedore leads Hawai’i and is sixth in the conference with a 3.46 kills per game average. In addition, All-American middle attacker Taylor Averill has a conference-best .510 attack percentage and is among the MPSF leaders with averaging 2.97 kills per game average. BYU is in fifth place in the MPSF after sweeping a two-match road series against No. 13 CSUN last week to snap its six-match losing streak. The Cougars have a chance to move into the top-four of the MPSF standings and host a postseason match if they sweep the regular season finale series against the Rainbow Warriors. This will also be the first meeting between the two teams at Smith Fieldhouse since the controversial ending to their MPSF Tournament quarterfinals match in 2013. BYU won in five games after a Hawai’i kill that would have a forced a fifth-game overtime was overturned because of a back-row violation.
