North Greenville to start men’s volleyball team for 2015 season

Another men’s volleyball program will join the Conference Carolinas for the 2015 season.

The North Greenville University athletics department announced earlier this week that it sponsor men’s volleyball beginning in the 2014-15 school year.

North Greenville, a Division II school located in Tigerville, S.C., will become the 10th men’s volleyball team to join the Conference Carolinas. The Crusaders currently compete in the Conference Carolinas for 15 of their 16 varsity sports.

The creation of a men’s volleyball team was one of three programs North Greenville will add in the next two years. The school will also add men’s and women’s lacrosse beginning in 2015.

“We are excited about the additions of men’s volleyball and lacrosse,” North Greenville athletics director Jan McDonald said in a statement. “Conference Carolinas has been at the forefront of developing these sports at the Division II level, and it will be great for us to be a part of this. The university continues to look for new ways to grow and improve our athletic programs, and these sports will attract a large number of quality student-athletes to NGU.”

The Conference Carolinas is an emerging men’s volleyball conference and will become eligible for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament starting next season. The Division II conference also is the only multi-sport conference in the nation to sponsor men’s volleyball.

With the addition of North Greenville, the Conference Carolinas become the second men’s volleyball conference to have at least 10 members. The MPSF remains the largest men’s volleyball conference at 13 schools.
