  1. Big win for the Tritons. Big. Would you say it’s to the level of Oregon State beating Penn State early in the women’s season this year?

    1. It’s a pretty big shocker. However, UC San Diego has a knack for upsetting teams at the beginning of the season. Interesting to see how this group develops under coach Ring this year.

  2. UCSD is legit. Time will tell….but these weren’t massive upsets, if you consider that UCSD finished 9th in the MPSF last year and returned 6 of 7 in the starting rotation. How they were picked to finish 13th in the pre-season is probably all the motivation they needed to prove the naysayers wrong. Frishman, Eberts, and Lennon are solid Fab-50 guys who fell through the recruiting cracks, but they anchor one of the most experienced and consistent receiving lines in DI-II — Frish and Eberts are seniors who have started just about their whole career.

We’re still trying to figure out how Dempsey (setter) sneaked out of the midwest with barely a sniff. Any ideas, Vinnie? Only thing I can think of is that he’s small. Kind of reminds me a little bit of Devaney from UCSB a couple years ago, another small guy who seems to play quite big for his size. But Dempsey is the real deal.

And Cal Baptist is a legit program as well. I suspect they may wilt under the intense MPSF competition during their inaugural season, but they are easily capable of winning if a better MPSF team doesn’t come ready to play.
