The battle for West Virginia is back on.

Charleston as part of recently unveiling its 2023 schedule announced it will play a road match against Alderson Broaddus in the first meeting between the two in-state teams in five years.

Charleston and Alderson Broaddus are separated by less than 150 miles and are the only NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball programs in West Virginia. In addition, the Feb. 7 non-conference meeting will end the five-year series hiatus after the two teams played each other nine times from 2015-18.

The Golden Eagles finished last season in seventh place in the EIVA and won four of their final five matches to close out the season. Among the starters returning for Charleston includes outside attacker Lachlan Bray who spent the offseason playing for Australia in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League.

The Battlers won six matches in 2022 – their highest single-season win total since 2017. The independent team also went 0-3 at the IVA Tournament.

Alderson Broaddus leads the all-time series 6-3, but Charleston won the last three meetings.
