King libero stands out for Puerto Rico in Junior Pan Am Games finale

King All-ConfCarolinas libero Noah Melendez capped off the Junior Pan American Games with another double-digit digs performance for Puerto Rico.

Melendez finished with a match-high 17 digs as Puerto Rico lost to the Dominican Republic 26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16 in the fifth-place match on Monday in Colombia.

This was the third time in Puerto Rico’s four matches at the international event that Melendez had at least 10 digs. The senior also entered the finale eighth at the tournament with 32 digs.


The Dominican Republic in the victory had eight aces — five more aces than Puerto Rico.

Despite the loss, Puerto Rico out-hit Dominican Republic .278 to .258 and had two players finish with double-digit kills. George Mason outside attacker Omar Hoyos had 14 kills on a .367 attack percentage, while opposite Sebastian Negron added a match-high 23 kills.

Opposite Bryan Turbides led the Dominican Republic with 13 kills.

Puerto Rico out-blocked the Dominican Republic 12 to 6 with Lewis middle attacker Antonio Rodriguez having a match-high six blocks. This defensive performance came one day after had a tournament-best seven blocks in a loss to Colombia.
