Another big offensive performance from opposite Gabi Garcia turned into a literal silvering lining for the United States.
Garcia finished with a match-high 18 kills on a .433 attack percentage as the United States lost to Canada 26-24, 26-24, 26-28, 25-19 in the Pan American Cup gold-medal match on Sunday in the Dominican Republic.
The former BYU All-American had at least four kills in all four games, including a game-high six in the third-game victory to extend the match. Garcia also finished the tournament leading all players with a combined 93 kills and earned the event’s Best Scorer award.
The United States in the loss was out-hit .361 to .242 and committed 23 attack errors – 12 more attack errors than Canada.
Along with Garcia, former CSUN middle attacker Daniel Wetter had 10 kills on a team-best .529 attack percentage. UCLA pin-hitter Cooper Robinson added nine kills highlighted with a team-high six in the opening game.
Pin-hitter Isaac Hesling led Canada with 14 kills, while Jesse Elser contributed 12 kills and hit .435 en route to winning the gold medal.
Former Long Beach State libero Mason Briggs ended with a match-high 19 digs against Canada. This was the third match at the tournament that Briggs had more than 15 digs.
