What to know: Hawai’i versus UC Irvine is more than just a series to decide seeding in the Big West Tournament – it’s a de facto elimination series for NCAA Tournament at-large bid hopes. Both the Anteaters and Rainbow Warriors enter the series in contention for one of the two at-large bids. However, a series sweep would result in the other team being knocked out of the at-large race, according to the latest Off the Block bracketology. This will be the second meeting between the schools this season with Hawai’i defeating UC Irvine in five games at the Outrigger Invitational to close out the non-conference schedule. Outside attacker Hilir Henno in the loss had a career-high 36 kills on a .412 attack percentage. Henno has at least 20 kills in seven matches so far this season and is second in the nation with a 4.73 kills per game average. Both UC Irvine and Hawai’i will have multiple starting lineup changes compared to their first match-up. The Anteaters return both opposites William D’Arcy and Nolan Flexen, who did not play against the Rainbow Warriors. UC Irvine due to these injuries played the initial match against Hawai’i running a 6-2 offense. Hawai’i also will continue to be without All-American outside attacker Spyros Chakas. Chakas suffered a season-ending leg injury late in the fifth game against UC Irvine. Hawai’i since the Chakas injury is 3-3, including sweeping a two-match series against UC Santa Barbara last weekend. Freshman outside attacker Louis Sakanoko starting in place of Chakas has at least 15 kills in three of the last five matches and has hit more than .300 twice.
