What to know: There is no easing into No. 1/2 Hawai’i trying to find a way to win without its top player. Hawai’i days after learning that All-American outside attacker Spyros Chakas will miss the rest of the season with leg injury will now travel to open a two-match conference series against No. 2/1 Long Beach State. Chakas suffered the injury while attempting a kill late in the fifth game of the team’s victory against No. 5/5 UC Irvine on Sunday. Chakas is fifth in the nation with a 4.15 kills per game average and helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to the nation’s longest active winning streak at 16 matches. Despite the loss of Chakas, Hawai’i still has multiple offensive options at the pins. Opposite Todd Alaka’i is among the national leaders with a 3.32 kills per game average and sixth in the country hitting .410. Outside attacker Chaz Galloway also is in the nation’s top 25 hitting .326, while outside attacker Keoni Thiim is ninth in the nation averaging 0.51 aces per game. An additional option for the Rainbow Warriors is freshman pin-hitter Louis Sakanoko, who primarily coming off the bench has appeared in 33 games this season. Sakanoko is a member of the French U22 Men’s National Team and helped the country qualify for the U22 European Championship. Long Beach State enters this series on a six-match winning streak and is undefeated at home so far this season. In addition, the Beach has a nation-best 3.29 blocks per game average with three players in the nation’s top 15 for blocks. Freshman middle attacker Lazar Bouchkov leads the country with a 1.39 blocks per game average, including having a match-winning block in a five-game victory against No. 19 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. All-American middle attacker Simon Torwie is sixth in the nation averaging 1.23 blocks per game, while outside attacker Clark Godbold is 11th in the country with a 1.00 average. Along with Long Beach State’s front-row defense, Mason Briggs was the 2023 Erik Shoji Award winner as the nation’s top libero. Briggs so far this season leads the Big West and is sixth in the nation with a 2.52 digs per game average. This series will also feature the two teams ranked No. 1 in the national polls. Hawai’i was ranked No. 1 in the latest national coaches poll, and Long Beach State was ranked No. 1 in the latest national media poll.
