What to know: This is the opening conference match for both the Bruins and Cougars. UCLA holds a slim 41-39 advantage in the heated series history, with the Bruins winning both matches last year in Provo. Led by Grand Canyon transfer setter Heath Hughes, the Cougars have a pair of road wins against teams currently ranked in the national coaches poll. BYU ranks No. 9 nationally with 2.419 blocks per game, led middle attacker Teon Taylor’s 1.351 blocks per game (No. 3 nationally). On the other side of the net, UCLA has finally set on their starting setter. Rowan led UCLA to a season-high .551 attack percentage in the first match against Long Beach State, on the way to being named Off the Block’s National Setter of the Week. The Bruins rank in the top five nationally with 2.12 aces per game, 2.5 blocks per game, and a .365 attack percentage. Individually, outside attacker Ethan Champlin leads the MPSF with 0.5 aces per game while middle attacker Merrick McHenry is second in the conference with a .434 attack percentage.
