Match vitals: 4 p.m. in Austin, Texas Follow live:Live stats, Live video (VolleyballWorld TV) What to know: No. 4/4 Penn State has weathered the deluge of injuries and remained undefeated, but will now face its biggest test so far this season. Penn State will play No. 5/5 Pepperdine to open the First Point Collegiate Challenge in Austin, Texas. The Nittany Lions have been without All-American outside attacker Brett Wildman, All-American opposite Cal Fisher and middle attacker Sam Marsh through the team’s first four matches. Coach Mark Pavlik informed Off the Block on Thursday that both Wildman and Marsh will be match-time decisions if they can play, while Fisher will remain sidelined this week. Without these players in the lineup, senior opposite John Kerr has led Penn State with a 3.90 kills per game average. Kerr has hit at least .500 in three consecutive matches, including a season-high 21 kills on a .545 attack percentage in a four-game victory against No. 15 Ohio State. Setter Cole Bogner, the 2021 EIVA Player of the Year, also has helped guide the offense to a .377 attack percentage. Along with the Nittany Lions offense, middle attacker Owen Rose is second in the nation averaging 1.86 blocks per game and opened the season with at least seven blocks in three straight matches. Pepperdine enters this non-conference tournament having yet to lose a game during its four-match winning streak to start the season. All-American setter Bryce Dvorak is second in the nation with a 12.18 assists per game average and has led the Waves to a nation-best .420 attack percentage. In addition, Pepperdine finished with a .493 attack percentage in a sweep against the defending EIVA champions Princeton on Monday. Jasper is second in the nation with a 5.09 kills per game average and has at least 15 kills in two of the first four matches to start the season. This is the second consecutive year that a non-conference tournament has taken place in Austin. The NCAA champions Hawai’i went undefeated at the inaugural Texas event last season.
