Setter Kohl Kutsch one year into a college career is already earning one of the top honors in college men’s volleyball

A nationwide voting committee selected the Lincoln Memorial freshman as the Off the Block Independent Teams Player of the Year that was unveiled Wednesday on Off the Block.

The Independent Teams Player of the Year recognizes the best player during the season from NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams that are competing without a conference affiliation. The 11 independent teams this season were American International, Alderson Broaddus, Daemen, D’Youville, Fairleigh Dickinson, Limestone, Lincoln Memorial, Long Island, Maryville, Queens or Tusculum.

Kutsch guided the Lincoln Memorial offense to a .294 attack percentage, including the team hitting a season-high .479 in a sweep against Daemen in the IVA Tournament finals. Lincoln Memorial hit more than .400 five times this season and achieved the feat in home victories against MIVA opponents Purdue Fort Wayne and Loyola.

Head coaches from the independent NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams comprised the voting committee for Independent Teams Player of the Year

Kutsch received more than double the votes of any player for this award. Daemen outside attacker Zach Schneider finished as the runner-up with seven votes – 11 fewer votes than Kutsch.

Along with presenting the All-Independent Team, Off the Block presents the Independent Teams Player of the Year and the Independent Teams Freshman of the Year. The college men’s volleyball website also presented the Independent Teams Player of the Week throughout the regular season.

Off the Block is a national award winning website that started in 2011 and is the nation’s leader in college men’s volleyball coverage.
