What to know: If you don’t read anything else, just know that this is a battle of the last three national champions. Hawai’i has lost 14 of the last 21 matches in this series, and has not won in the Pyramid since TJ DeFalco was in high school. While both teams rank in the top two nationally in blocks per game, Long Beach State has the advantage in passing and digging. Hawai’i was aced a season-high ten times last Friday, and starting libero Brett Sheward was eventually pulled. Hawai’i also ranks second worst in the conference at 7.67 digs per game. If Hawai’i pulls out a win, it might be in #CincoSets, as all of the Beach’s losses have come in five-game matches; two of Hawai’i’s three losses have also gone the distance. Hawai’i is using their conference-best 2.25 aces per game to limit their opposition to a .191 attack percentage – No. 3 nationally. The Warriors are just 1-3 on the road this year, while the Beach is 11-1 at home. Long Beach State is ranked No. 1 in the latest RPI rankings, while Hawai’i comes in at No. 8; the Warriors have the 19th toughest schedule while Long Beach State has the 8th toughest schedule. In terms of position battles, Hawai’i will look to setter Jakob Thelle to set the tone; his .667 aces per game leads the nation. The Warriors will also lean on middle attacker Guilherme Voss to spearhead their block as his 1.44 blocks per game also leads the nation. As for the Beach, their freshman outside attacker Alex Nikolov has been everything they expected and more. Nikolov is No. 3 nationally with .597 aces per game, leads the team with a .366 attack percentage, and is also No. 3 nationally with 4.37 kills per game. Beach setter Aidan Knipe’s 11.09 assists per game ranks third nationally. Expect a packed house as the bitter rivals rank in the top three nationally in attendance, and 27 of the top 45 single-match attendance records this year involve one of these two teams. And if all of that is not enough, let us not forget the piped-in noise controversy that marred the last time these two played. With no fans in attendance, there were two delays in the match 363 days ago where Long Beach State coach Alan Knipe complained about the piped-in noise affecting Long Beach State’s ability to serve.
