Olympics volleyball chaos: Quarterfinals berths, seeding scenarios for Pool B

Not only is the U.S. chances for a quarterfinals undecided entering the final day of the preliminary round — all four seeds to the quarterfinals in Pool B are still up for grabs.

The final day of the preliminary round will begin Saturday night and conclude with the United States versus Argentina on Sunday morning. Check out some of the possible quarterfinals seeding scenarios for Pool B of the Olympics men’s volleyball tournament.

The top four indoor men’s volleyball teams in each pool at the end of the pool-play stage will advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament. The fifth and sixth-place teams will be eliminated from the tournament. In the event that two or more teams have the same records at the end of the pool-play stage, the tiebreakers will be match points, then set win-loss record, then point differential and finally head-to-head results.

Possible seeding scenarios

Russia — Can clinch the No. 1 seed and the pool championship if it beats Tunisia in three or four sets; beats Tunisia in five sets and Brazil loses at least two sets to France.

Brazil — Can clinch the No. 1 seed and the pool championship if it beats France and Russia loses to Tunisia; sweeps France and Russia loses two sets against Tunisia.. Can clinch the No. 2 seed if it beats France in five sets; loses in five sets to France, the United States loses at least two sets to Argentina and wins the point differential tiebreaker against France. Can clinch the No. 3 seed if it loses in five sets to France, the United States beats Argentina in five sets or Argentina wins.

France — Can clinch the No. 1 seed and the pool championship if it beats Brazil in three or four sets and Russia loses to Tunisia in three sets; beats Brazil in four games, Russia loses to Tunisia in four games and France wins the point differential tiebreaker. Can clinch the No. 2 seed if it beats Brazil in three or four games; beats Brazil in five games, the United States loses at least two sets to Argentina and wins the point differential tiebreaker against Brazil. Can clinch a quarterfinals berth if it beats Brazil; loses in five sets to Brazil; loses to Brazil in three or four games and Argentina beats the United States in three or four games.

United States — Can clinch the No. 2 seed if it sweeps Argentina and France beats Brazil in a fifth game. Can clinch the No. 3 seed if it beats Argentina in three or four sets; beats Argentina in five games and Brazil beats France. Can clinch a quarterfinals berth if it beats Argentina; wins two sets against Argentina and France loses to Brazil in three or four games.

Argentina — Can clinch the No. 3 seed if it beats the United States in three or four sets and Brazil beats France in three or four games. Can clinch a quarterfinals berth if it beats the United States.

Tunisia — Eliminated from quarterfinals contention.
