What to know: It’s an unlikely match to kick off the college men’s volleyball season — but this entire 2021 season will be anything but normal. Quincy for the first time in its program history will play the second-year NAIA program Indiana Teach on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks in the MIVA Preseason Poll were projected to finish the upcoming conference season in last place and ended the shortened 2020 season in last place. Two All-MIVA selections, though, return to the Quincy starting lineup — opposite Omari Wheeler and libero Noam Hannoun. Wheeler ended last season in the nation’s top 25 with a 3.54 kills per game average, including having a team-high 18 kills in an upset victory versus Purdue Fort Wayne. Hannoun was third in the nation with a 2.81 digs per game average and had double-digit digs in four conference matches in 2020. Indiana Tech enters this road non-conference match after upsetting the NAIA No. 2 nationally ranked team Campbellsville on Saturday. Outside attacker Daynte Stewart in the season-opening victory had a match-high 14 kills and added 10 digs. Indiana Tech, which was a member of the MIVA from 1962-73 before disbanding its program, re-started its program in 2020 with Kyle Shondell as its head coach. Shondell is the grandson of Hall of Famer and former Ball State coach Don Shondell.
