What to know: The nation’s biggest surprise team this season will face its biggest challenge so far as No. 6/6 UC San Diego travels to play No. 3/3 UC Santa Barbara in conference play. The Tritons have their best national ranking in program history and are on a six-match winning streak. Among the victories during this streak included two victories against No. 7/8 UC Irvine — the team’s first conference wins since joining the Big West in 2018. Outside attacker Kyle McCaluey had a combined 41 kills in those Big West wins and is in the nation’s top 10 averaging 4.05 kills per game. UC Santa Barbara opens conference play on a seven-match winning streak and its only two losses of the season were road losses at No. 1/2 BYU. Setter Casey McGarry has guided the Gauchos to the fifth-best attack percentage in the country at .335, including hitting more than .400 in two of their last four matches. McGarry also leads the Big West and is fourth in the nation with both a 10.71 assists per game average and a 2.56 digs per game average.
