Lewis no longer unanimous No. 1 in Division II poll

There is no consensus among the voters for the No. 1 ranked team in the latest Off the Block/Springbak Division II National Coaches Poll that was released Tuesday morning.

Lewis remained No. 1 but is no longer unanimous top team in the poll as it was swept by MIVA rival Loyola on Wednesday.

Lewis bounced back to sweep both Lincoln Memorial and King. In the two non-conference tilts, the Flyers offense hit for an efficient .421 and .530. The team will now travel to Hawaii this week to participate in the Outrigger Invitational versus Hawai’i, BYU, and Penn State.

Even though Concordia-Irvine was swept on the road by Hawai’i twice this past weekend, the Eagles picked up a first-place vote. The Eagles were led by outsider attacker Raymond Barsemian, who had 18 kills in series. The Eagles also finished 11 blocks in their two matches — nearly a whole block per game below their average that is second-best in the nation.

McKendree dropped both of its matches versus Ohio State during the weekend. The Bearcats, though, feature the sixth-most efficient attacker in the nation middle attacker Brendan Schmidt, who hit at a .375 clip in the two losses.

UC San Diego remains at No. 4 following three-game losses to both UC Santa Barbara and Ball State.

Senior opposite Tanner Syftestad continues to lead the nation in kills per game average, attacks per game average, and points per game average. He had a combined for 28 kills for a .437 attacking percentage in the two losses this weekend. UC San Diego will continue with non-conference play this week as it faces former of MPSF foes USC and Stanford.

Barton rounds out the top-five poll for the second consecutive week.

The Bulldogs have won 12 of their last 13, including its last seven matches. Barton is a perfect 9-0 in Conference Carolinas play and lead the conference in assists and kills per game average.
