Lewis adds beach gems with latest recruiting class

Two highly accomplished beach volleyball players and an all-state outside attacker have committed to Lewis.

Lewis coach Dan Friend announced on Tuesday that high school seniors Cole Brillhart, Jason Gibbs and Clay Messenger have all signed national letters of intent to play for the Flyers beginning in the 2019 season.

“We are excited that these three young men have joined the Lewis Flyer family,” Friend said in a statement. “They have a lot of playing experience and bring a wealth of knowledge that will improve our gym.”

Brillhart, a 6-foot-1 outside attacker from York, Pennsylvania, earned first-team all-conference and first-team all-state honors earlier this year. He also led his high school team to a 20-2 record and the 2017 state championship.

Gibbs, a 6-foot-4 setter from Bellaire, Texas, has won back-to-back gold medals at the USA Volleyball U19 Beach High Performance Championships. Along with his beach experience, Gibbs helped his club indoor volleyball team have two consecutive top-five finishes at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships.

Messenger, a beach volleyball player from St. Augustine, Florida, represented the United States and finished in ninth place at the 2017 FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball World Championship. He also had a top-20 finish at the FIVB U19 Beach Volleyball World Championship last year.

Lewis ended last season in second place in the MIVA and was ranked at No. 7 in both the national coaches poll and national media poll.
