The run for Lincoln Memorial opposite Evan Cory to make the main draw at one of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour’s biggest tournaments came up just short.
Cory competing as an amateur lost in the third round of the four-round qualification tournament to the New York City Open on Thursday at the Hudson River Park’s Pier.
Cory and his beach volleyball partner John Hamilton lost to the pair Michael Brunsting and Chase Frishman 24-22, 21-19 in the single-elimination tournament. In addition, Cory and Hamilton advanced to the third round after sweeping its opening-round match and then rallying to beat the team of Mark Van Zwieten and Steve Van Zwieten 16-21, 21-14, 15-7 in the second round.
As a freshman last season, Cory ended the regular season leading Lincoln Memorial with a 2.87 kills per game average and had double-digit kills in 14 matches. He also was an Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. All-IVA Team selection and helped the first-year program finish with a 10-17 record.
Brunsting and Frishman following the victory against Cory and Hamilton swept their next match to clinch a spot in the main draw. Four teams from the qualifying tournament received berths to the 16-team main draw tournament.
The double-elimination main draw tournament will begin Friday and conclude with the championship match on Sunday afternoon.
