UC Irvine among nation’s leaders in strength of schedule rankings

One of the toughest schedules in the nation is benefitting UC Irvine in the college men’s volleyball bracketology.

The Anteaters at No. 3 had the highest strength of schedule ranking among teams projected by Off the Block to be under NCAA Tournament consideration.

UC San Diego and USC were the only teams to have a better strength of schedule ranking than UC Irvine in the latest rankings that the NCAA released earlier this week.

Among the strength of schedule rankings for projected teams under NCAA consideration is UCLA at No. 4, Ohio State at No. 5, Hawai’i at No. 8 and BYU at No. 9. In addition, the EIVA first-place team Penn State has the 15th best strength of schedule, while the Conference Carolinas first-place team Mount Olive is 41 out of 43 teams.

Strength of schedule is part of the mathematical formula used to determine a team’s RPI. The other RPI components include a team’s winning percentage and a team’s opponent strength of schedule.

BYU and Long Beach State have the two best opponent strength of schedule rankings.

The strength of schedule rankings will continue to be updated throughout the postseason and through Selection Sunday on April 23.
