What to know: Two of the nation’s best players from the service line will be on opposite ends of the court as No. 2 UCLA opens its MPSF season with a home match against No. 7/8 UC Irvine. UCLA All-American setter Micah Ma’a is the defending Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Server of the Year after finishing his freshman season with a school-record 58 aces and the nation’s fifth-best aces per game average at 0.48. In addition, UC Irvine setter and opposite Michael Saeta was a finalist for the 2016 Off the Block/Springbak after leading the MPSF with a 0.52 aces per game average. Saeta through the first five matches this season already has 17 aces, including a match-high five aces in a comeback five-game victory versus No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday. The All-MPSF senior in that road win also had 11 kills and zero attack errors for a .786 attack percentage to help the Anteaters remain undefeated. UCLA enters its conference opener following a four-game road loss to No. 1/1 Ohio State on Saturday. Outside attacker Jake Arnitz in the loss led the Bruins with both 16 kills and two aces. UCLA split both its regular season matches against UC Irvine last season with Arnitz having a combined 28 kills in the two matches. In addition, the Bruins through their first three matches are hitting .320 — almost .010 percentage points higher than last season when it had the fifth-highest attack percentage in the nation.
