Top college men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

What to know: No. 2 UCLA will attempt to get its second straight non-conference victory versus a nationally ranked team as it plays No. 13 Penn State to open the AVCA Showcase. All-American outside attacker Jake Arnitz had a team-high 11 kills on a .400 attack percentage in the a season-opening sweep against No. 11 Loyola on Thursday. The Bruins in the road match finished with a .384 attack percentage, including hitting .630 with one attack error in the third game to complete the sweep. In addition, All-American setter Micah Ma’a along with running the Bruins 6-2 offense added a team-high seven blocks. UCLA in the preseason were picked to finish in second place in the MPSF and had three players earn Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-American honors, including Arnitz and Ma’a. The Bruins ended last season reaching the NCAA Tournament for the program’s first time in almost a decade. Penn State returns several starters after suffering a season-ending loss in the EIVA Tournament semifinals last year. It also was the first time since 1998 that the Nittany Lions failed to make the NCAA Tournament. Despite the postseason loss, Penn State was picked to finish the EIVA in second place in the conference’s preseason poll. Preseason All-American outside attacker Chris Nugent returns for his senior season after being in the nation’s top 15 last season with both a 3.84 kills per game average and a .309 attack percentage. He also was the 2016 Co-EIVA Player of the Year as Penn State won the EIVA regular season championship. This will be the second consecutive year that the Nittany Lions and Bruins play each other in the opening week of the season. UCLA defeated Penn State on the road last season and finished the year undefeated in non-conference play.

What to know: Two of the top offensive teams in the nation last year will open the season against each other in a top-10 match-up as No. 3 BYU travels to No. 6 Lewis. BYU ended last season leading the nation with .360 attack percentage as it won the MPSF championship and reached the NCAA Tournament finals. In addition, All-American opposite Ben Patch was fifth in the nation averaging 4.32 kills per game average. The 2016 Bryan Ivie Award recipient also had at least 20 kills in the first three matches he played in last year. Patch, who is entering his junior season, told The Deseret News earlier this week that this will likely be his final season at BYU. Along with Patch, the Cougars return Preseason All-American outside attackers Brenden Sander and Jake Langlois. Lewis two years removed from reaching the NCAA Tournament finals ended last season advancing to the MIVA Tournament finals. The Flyers also was seventh in the nation with a .306 attack percentage in 2016. Similar to the Cougars, the Flyers return a majority of starters including Preseason All-American opposite Mitch Perinar. Perinar, the 2016 MIVA Newcomer of the Year, was among the MIVA leaders with a 3.03 kills per game average and hit more than .300. This will be the second time in the last four years that BYU will open its season with a Midwest road trip. The Cougars on the road lost to the Flyers in 2014 as they opened that season 0-2 before rebounding to win the MPSF championship.
