What to know: No one needs to remind No. 3/3 BYU what happened the last time it played host to No. 7/7 UC Irvine in a regular season match. The Anteaters return Smith Fieldhouse almost two years since they ended the Cougars’ 36-match home winning streak. The defending MPSF champions BYU enters this two-match series as one of three MPSF teams undefeated in conference play. BYU had more than a .300 attack percentage in both of its four-game road victories against No. 15 CSUN last week to open its MPSF season. All-American opposite Ben Patch also had a combined 40 kills in the series, including a match-high 24 kills while hitting .415 in the finale on Friday. The 2016 Bryan Ivie Award recipient as the nation’s top opposite is leading the nation with a 5.35 kills per game average. Along with Patch, setter Leo Durkin is third in the nation averaging 11.29 assists per game. He also has guided the Cougars offense to the top five in the MPSF with a .322 attack percentage. UC Irvine after opening the season on a five-match winning streak has lost two of its last three matches. Opposite and setter Michael Saeta leads the MPSF with a 0.80 aces per game average and is one of two Anteaters who already have double-digit aces this season. In addition, freshman middle attacker Scott Stadick is in the nation’s top 10 with both a 1.15 blocks per game average and a .455 attack percentage. BYU is on an eight-match home winning streak dating back to last season. However, UC Irvine has a history of success at Smith Fieldhouse. The Anteaters swept that two-match series against the Cougars in 2015 en route to winning the MPSF championship and are 4-1 in their last five matches at Smith Fieldhouse. In addition, UC Irvine won the 2009 NCAA championship that was held at the Smith Fieldhouse.
