Last U21 NORCECA title: United States (2012); Cuba (2014)
What to know: The two teams that have combined to win the last six gold medals at the U21 NORCECA Continental Championship will meet in the finals with a berth to the 2017 U21 FIVB World Championship on the line. Both the undefeated United States and Cuba enter this gold-medal match without losing a single-game throughout the entire tournament. The two nations also have been the top offensive teams at the bi-annual international tournament. Cuba leads all teams with a .528 attack percentage, while the United States is second hitting .433. UCLA outside attacker Dylan Missry leads the United States with a combined 19 kills, including having a match-high 11 kills in a sweep against Canada in the semifinals on Saturday. Stanford outside attacker Jordan Ewert added nine kills versus Canada, while Long Beach State Freshman All-American opposite Kyle Ensing had eight kills and a game-winning ace in overtime. Long Beach State Freshman All-American setter Josh Tuaniga also guided the U.S. offense to a .359 attack percentage against Canada to help the United States reach the finals for the first time since last winning the tournament in 2012. Three Cuban players are in the tournament’s top four with more than a 55 percent offensive efficiency. Outside attacker Miguel Lopez leads Cuba and is among the tournament leaders with 40 kills on a .507 attack percentage. Along with both teams offensive performances, the United States and Cuba lead the tournament averaging more than 2.20 blocks per game. Cuba also has a tournament-best 41 aces with 10 aces coming in its semifinal sweep versus Guatemala on Saturday. This will be the first time since 2006 that the United States and Cuba have met in the U21 NORCECA finals. While the winner will receive an automatic berth to the upcoming U21 World Championship, the silver medalist can still earn a berth to that tournament based on their FIVB World Ranking. The United States was ranked No. 14 and Cuba was at No. 11 in latest FIVB rankings released in September.
