The biggest non-conference weekend in college men’s volleyball continues with multiple match-ups against nationally ranked teams.
No. 3 Loyola and No. 2 UC Irvine will meet in a rematch from last year’s postseason with both teams trying to get a signature non-conference victory. In addition, No. 1 BYU will attempt to avoid upset as it plays host to No. 14 George Mason.

No. 2 UC Irvine (1-0, 0-0 MPSF) vs. No. 3 Loyola (0-2, 0-0 MIVA)

What to know: It’s only the first week of the season, but the defending-NCAA champions Loyola are in need of a victory to salvage the opening week. No. 3 Loyola will play No. 2 UC Irvine in its AVCA Showcase finale as the team attempts to end its season-opening two-match losing streak. Loyola was held to less than a .200 attack percentage in a four-game loss against No. 1 BYU on Friday. Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-American middle attacker Nicholas Olson had a nine kills on a .500 attack percentage and a match-high five blocks in the Ramblers’ AVCA Showcase opener. In addition, opposite Ricky Gevis in the loss led Loyola with 15 kills and three aces. UC Irvine swept No. 14 George Mason to open the non-conference tournament on Friday. All-American opposite Tamhir Hershko also had a team-high 11 kills against the Patriots. This will be the first meeting between the Ramblers and Anteaters since Loyola defeated UC Irvine in the NCAA Tournament semifinals last season. If the Ramblers lose this rematch, the team will have as many losses this season as they had the last two seasons combined.

What to know: The challenging non-conference schedule for No. 14 George Mason will continue tonight as it tries to stop No. 1 BYU and Preseason All-American opposite Ben Patch. Patch in his first college match since returning from a two-year church mission had a match-high 21 kills to help BYU beat Loyola in four games on Friday at the AVCA Showcase. The 2013 AVCA Newcomer of the Year also had a team-high .462 attack percentage and added an ace in the season-opening victory. Along with Patch, setter Leo Durkin in his first college start had a 44 assists and guided the Cougars offense to a .333 attack percentage. The Patriots will be playing its third top-five nationally ranked team in the last five days. George Mason opened the season at home losing to No. 3 UCLA before losing to No. 2 UC Irvine in the AVCA Showcase on Friday. Outside attacker Christian Malias had double-digit kills in both matches, including a team-high 10 kills on a .300 attack percentage in the loss to the Anteaters.
