Loyola, Lewis assistants earn AVCA national coaching award

Two MIVA assistant coaches were ranked among the best young coaches in the nation.

Loyola assistant coach Kris Berzins and Lewis assistant coach Matt McCarthy were selected to the Thirty Under 30 list that the AVCA released earlier this week.

The Thirty Under 30 is an annual AVCA award that honors the 30 best volleyball coaches in the nation who are 30 years old or younger.

As an assistant coach Berzins guided multiple teams to championships last year. Berzins helped Loyola win its first NCAA championship in program history and then in the off-season led the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team to a gold-medal finish at the NORCECA Championship.

McCarthy, a two-time Thirty Under 30 recipient, helped Lewis last year become the second non-West Coast team in the history of the NCAA Tournament to receive an at-large bid. In addition, the Flyers are currently in first place in the MIVA and projected to make the upcoming NCAA Tournament, according to the latest Off the Block bracketology projections.

Berzins and McCarthy were two of the three college men’s volleyball coaches to make the annual list. Vinicius Baigan, an assistant coach at the NAIA school Park, also earned the Thirty Under 30 honors.
