Top college men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

The top of the conference standings could get a significant shake-up by the end of the tonight.

No. 3 UC Irvine will have a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the MPSF if it can defeat No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. In addition, Penn State will try to keep its first-place lead in the EIVA as it travels to play Harvard.

No. 3 UC Irvine (15-3, 10-2 MPSF) vs. No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (11-5, 7-5 MPSF)

What to know: The best offense in the conference will go up against one best defensive teams in recent weeks as No. 3 UC Irvine play host to No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. The Anteaters have at least a .300 attack percentage in their last 11 matches and lead the MPSF with a .352 attack percentage. In addition, UC Irvine swept No. 9 UCLA on Friday to extend its winning streak to six matches and remain undefeated in February. UC Santa Barbara has kept opponents to less than .100 attack percentage in its last three matches, including holding UC San Diego to a .047 attack percentage in a sweep on Friday. With that sweep, the Gauchos are on a five-match winning streak and set a school rally scoring era record winning 14 consecutive games. This match will also feature two of the top outside attackers in the MPSF. UC Irvine outside attacker Tamhir Hershko is second in the MPSF with a 3.80 kills per game average, while UC Santa Barbara outside attacker Kevin Donohue is in the top five of the MPSF averaging 3.73 kills per game.

Penn State (5-9, 3-0 EIVA) vs. Harvard (8-4, 3-1 EIVA)

What to know: First place in the EIVA will be on the line as Harvard plays host to Penn State. Harvard leads the conference with a .318 attack percentage, including having a season-high .525 attack percentage in a sweep against St. Francis on Friday. That victory extended the Crimson’s winning streak to three matches and moved the team within a half-match of first-place Penn State. In addition, Harvard at home has a history of beating Penn State. The Crimson pulled off the upset in 2013 to snap the Nittany Lions’ 60-match conference winning streak dating back to 2008. Penn State enters this match after sweeping Sacred Heart on Friday to remain the only undefeated EIVA team in conference play. All-American outside attacker Aaron Russell in the victory had a match-high 11 kills on a season-best .556 attack percentage. Russell now has double-digit kills in seven consecutive matches and is second in the EIVA with a 4.43 kills per game average.

What to know: No. 13 Ball State will try to better adjust its serving to the thin air of Provo, Utah, and take another shot at ending No. 5 BYU’s historic home winning streak. The Cardinals had a season-high 17 serving errors in a three-game loss against the Cougars on Friday to open their two-match non-conference series. Outside attacker Brenden Sander coming off the bench led BYU with eight kills against Ball State. The victory also extended the Cougars’ home winning streak to a school record 35 matches. Despite the loss, freshman middle attacker Matt Walsh finished with a match-high four blocks and added eight kills on a .429 attack percentage. Walsh entered this weekend with a nation-best 1.75 blocks per game average.
