Penn State, BYU among most followed men’s volleyball teams on Twitter

Not all college men’s volleyball teams have the same influence when it comes to social media.

A recent study of NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball team Twitter accounts revealed that Penn State and BYU are leading all other teams in followers — and by a wide-margin.

Penn State, which has a joint Twitter account for its men’s and women’s volleyball teams, had a nation-best 8,064 followers. In addition, BYU finished in second-place with 2,286 followers and has the highest following in the nation for any Twitter account solely focusing on college men’s volleyball.

The Nittany Lions and Cougars were only teams of the 21 Division I-II men’s volleyball teams on Twitter with more than 1,000 followers.

Ohio State led the MIVA and comes in third place with 863 followers, while Ball State at 847 followers and Stanford at 826 followers round out the nation’s top five.

Nine teams also had at least 500 followers, including two-time defending NCAA champions UC irvine that came in seventh place with 682 followers.

Despite the majority of teams having a presence on Twitter, 17 Division I-II men’s volleyball teams do not have a Twitter account. Several of those teams, though, have some presence on Twitter with unofficial team Twitter accounts or the school’s main athletics department Twitter account tweeting about the team.
