Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge both remain undefeated after the opening day of the USC Fall Invitational.
Long Beach State, which reached the MPSF Tournament semifinals last season, opened its preseason Friday with a sweep against USC and then defeated UCLA in three games. In addition, Cal State Northridge after missing the conference tournament last year, swept Lewis and Cal Baptist in its first two matches of the tournament.
Along with Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge, USC and UCLA split their two matches Friday.
USC rebounded from its opening loss and swept Lewis to end the first day of the two-day tournament. The USC-Lewis match was the invitational’s spotlight match and was played at the Galen Center Arena immediately following the No. 3 USC women’s volleyball team’s four-game home victory against No. 16 Oregon.
UCLA in its lone win of the opening day swept Cal Baptist as Bruins middle attacker Thomas Amberg and outside attacker Nick Vogel each had six kills in the victory.
The USC Fall Invitational is one of the first tournaments of the men’s volleyball preseason. Six of the eight teams participating in the invitational ended last season ranked in the final top 15 coaches poll.
Each match in this preseason tournament is a best-of-three games, instead of the typical best-of-five game matches played during the regular season.
If a team at sweeps a match in two games, both head coaches will have the option of playing an additional third game.
The USC Fall Invitational will conclude Saturday with 16 matches.
