  • Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

    It’s a Midwest thing tonight in college men’s volleyball.

    Three matches involving top 10 nationally ranked teams will be played in the Midwest, including No. 9 Ohio State playing host to No. 4 Stanford. In addition, No. 6 Lewis will look to move into the top five of the national rankings next week if it can beat George Mason tonight.

    Marquee matches between top 10 nationally ranked teams are throughout the nation — and not just contained to the West Coast — tonight.

    No. 3 UC Irvine playing host to No. 5 USC in MPSF action highlights the late-night matches, while in the Midwest No. 4 Stanford and No. 7 Penn State will meet in the Dunlap Invitational.

  • The five teams that could surprise everyone in 2012

    There are some teams that no one is talking about but could surprise people by the end of the season.

    Whether it was UC Santa Barbara’s run to the NCAA championship match last season or Juniata reaching the EIVA championship match in 2009, there are always men’s volleyball teams each season that pleasantly surprise everyone in the nation.

    Several teams last season that did not reach their conference tournament or finished outside of the national rankings could have a big season in 2012.

  • 2012 Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams released

    A nationwide voting committee selected 21 players to the Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams.

    The Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams recognizes the Division I-II men’s volleyball players projected to be the best in the nation during the upcoming season. Ten players were selected as Preseason First-Team All-Americans and 11 players were named Preseason Second-Team All-Americans.

  • Pacific goes nationwide for players in new recruiting class

    Pacific added players from Illinois and Florida in its newest recruiting class to continue its trend of signing players from around the country.

    Pacific announced Thursday that high school seniors Martin Ross and Christian Franceschi have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Tigers for the 2013 season.

  • Pacific releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    A road match against the defending NCAA champions Ohio State and a 22-match MPSF schedule highlights Pacific’s upcoming season as the team earlier this week released its 2012 regular season schedule.

    Pacific ended last year No. 15 in the final coaches poll and won its most matches since the 2007 season but failed to make the eight-team MPSF Tournament. The Tigers have all their starters returning for the upcoming season, including All-MPSF Honorable Mention outside attacker Taylor Hughes.

  • USA Volleyball reveals roster for 2011 World University Games

    Five current college men’s volleyball players and seven recent graduates will represent the United States at the World University Games.

    USA Volleyball announced Monday its 12-player roster and six alternates for the 2011 World University Games on Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen, China.

    “The team motto is ‘The Tradition Continues,’” head coach Gordon Mayforth said in a statement released Monday. “The USA has had a long tradition of doing well at this event. When you read the players and names on the list, I think we should expect to be in the mix.”

  • Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year: Round 2

    Off the Block created the bracket and seeded 64 of the best college men’s volleyball players. Now it’s up to you determine who should be the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

    After the first round, 32 players remain in the only national player of the year award that is completely determined by the fans.

    The online voting for the 16 second-round matches will end at 11 p.m. Thursday. The winners will advance to the third round Friday.

    Check out the second-round online ballots below and vote for the players who you think should move to the next round.

    [Editor’s note: The poll results for the second round matches Murphy Troy vs. Joshua Walker and Joe Sander vs. Jay Petty are not appearing for some people when viewing this page. Walker defeated Troy 147-132 and Sander defeated Petty 144-37.]
