For the first time this season, a player besides All-American outside attacker Taylor Sander led BYU in kills but the Cougars were still able to get a critical road conference victory.
Outside attacker Josue Rivera had a season-high 15 kills as No. 3 BYU rallied from a one-game deficit to defeat No. 6 USC 16-25, 25-22, 15-125, 25-20, 15-10 on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Conference play begins tonight for several teams eyeing a conference title and trip to the NCAA Tournament this season.
No. 1 Loyola will attempt to remain atop the national rankings as it plays host to Ohio State in its MIVA opener. In addition, out in the West Coast the MPSF season continues with a marquee match-up between No. 3 BYU and No. 6 USC.
Outside attacker Josh Taylor came through when No. 3 Pepperdine need him the most and helped the team knock-off No. 4 BYU.
Taylor in the decisive fifth game led all players with five kills and added two blocks and an ace as Pepperdine defeated BYU 25-19, 17-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-11 on Friday in Malibu, Calif.

For the second time in the last three weeks, Loyola is back to the top spot in the national media poll.
Loyola after two weekend road victories coupled with a then-No. 1 Pepperdine loss jumped to No. 1 in the new Volleyball Magazine Poll that was released Tuesday.
