The Breakdown: How Big West teams fared versus their former MPSF rivals

All regular season matches between the Big West and MPSF are now in the history book. The Big West went 28-18 versus the MPSF, due in part to the 9-3 record posted by UC Irvine and the 6-0 record posted by Long Beach State. Big West teams were 16-9 at home, while 11-9 on the road.

This is the inaugural season of the Big West as a men’s volleyball conference. The addition of the Big West resulted in a split in the MPSF with six Big West schools leaving the federation during the offseason.

Bracketology: Team comparisons using selection committee criteria

Selection Sunday is less than a month away and there still remains a large group of teams in contention for a NCAA Tournament at-large bid, according to the latest Off the Block bracketology.

Off the Block has crunched the numbers using the same criteria as the selection committee to show how the top teams in the nation fare against each other in the race for the two at-large bids and NCAA Tournament seeding. (more…)

Video: Ma’a leads No. 3 UCLA to dominant sweep of No. 11 UCSB

So much for any concerns about the No. 3/3 UCLA offense being out of sync following a bye week.

All-American setter Micah Ma’a guided the offense to more than a .500 attack percentage in two of the three games as UCLA swept No. 11 UC Santa Barbara 25-22, 25-15, 25-18 on Wednesday in Los Angeles. (more…)

UC Irvine falls out of top 10 in new strength of schedule rankings

UC Irvine in the process of getting a non-conference during the weekend dropped out of the top 10 in a selection committee criteria category.

The Anteaters fell two spots to No. 12 in the latest strength of schedule rankings that the NCAA released earlier this week. (more…)

The majority of ranked teams on a bye week and no significant upsets makes for a static national rankings.
