New Places: College men’s volleyball transfers to know for 2023 season

There was plenty of activity in the NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball transfer portal this offseason.

Check out 25 transfers of note for the 2023 season.

Juan Alcoba, King
Former school: Erskine
Position: Setter
Class: Junior
Alcoba last season was fifth in the ConfCarolinas with a 9.48 assists per game average and averaged 1.61 digs per game. The setter had 1,782 career assists in three seasons with Erskine.

Viktor Berg, Concordia-Irvine
Former school: Emmanuel
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Sophomore
Berg in limited playing time last season as a freshman had 26 blocks and five aces.

Veit Bils, Charleston
Former school: Limestone
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Sophomore
The Freshman All-American ended last season in the nation’s top 15 with both a 1.05 blocks per game average and a .412 attack percentage.

Sean Califf, Daemen
Former school: Purdue Fort Wayne
Position: Setter
Class: Senior
Califf started 19 matches last season and had at least 40 assists in five matches.

Sergio Carrillo, Purdue Fort Wayne
Former school: North Greenville
Position: Setter
Class: Graduate student
Carrillo led the ConfCarolinas with a 9.92 assists per game and guided the offense to a .272 attack percentage as the all-conference setter helped North Greenville win the ConfCarolinas championship and then upset Princeton in the NCAA Tournament opening round.

Josh Friedman, Hawai’i
Former school: Orange Coast College
Position: Setter
Class: Sophomore
Friedman, a first-team all-state selection, guided Orange Coast to a conference-best .328 attack percentage as the Pirates won the 2022 state championship.

Troy Gooch, UCLA
Former school: Purdue Fort Wayne
Position: Libero
Class: Graduate student
Gooch led the MIVA with a 2.37 digs per game average and had a 96.7 percentage successful passing rating on 702 receptions as the libero earned all-conference honors last season.

Suetonis Harris, Charleston
Former school: King
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Graduate student
Harris finished last season seventh in the conference with a 3.69 kills per game average and earned Second-Team All-ConfCarolinas honors.

Hughes Heath, BYU
Former school: Grand Canyon
Position: Setter
Class: Senior
Heath compiled 1,678 career assists in four seasons at Grand Canyon and in limited playing time last season had three matches with at least 30 assists.

Austin Jacob, Charleston
Former school: Jamestown
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Junior
Jacob started at both setter and middle attacker at Jamestown last season and earned second-team all-conference honors.

Kevin Kobrine, USC
Former school: UCLA
Position: Opposite
Class: Senior
The Second-Team All-American and Bryan Ivie Award finalist was third in the MPSF with a .375 attack percentage and among the conference leaders averaging 2.49 kills per game last season.

Nick Martinski, Loyola
Former school: Ball State
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Graduate student
Martinski was third on Ball State last season with 410 service receptions and had a 92.7 percentage successful passing rating. The outside attacker also had a 1.76 digs per game average as Ball State reached the NCAA Tournament semifinals.

Noah Melendez, Purdue Fort Wayne

Position: Libero
Class: Graduate student
The First-Team All-ConfCarolinas libero was in the nation’s top 15 with a 2.20 digs per game average last season and had a 97.1 percentage successful passing rating on 410 receptions.

Felipe Mendes, Charleston
Former school: Warner
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Sophomore
Mendes as a freshman last season was among the team leaders with a 3.21 kills per game average and in the top 25 of the NAIA averaging 0.47 aces per game.

Ethan Morgan, Lincoln Memorial
Former school: El Camino College
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Junior
Morgan finished last season with a .439 attack percentage and a 1.25 blocks per game average as the middle attacker earned second-team all-conference honors.

Tinaishe Ndavazocheva, Ball State
Former school: Webber
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Sophomore
The outside attacker from Zimbabwe appeared in four matches for Webber last season and had at least five kills and a .300 attack percentage in three of those matches.

Jakub Osiewala, Limestone
Former school: Charleston
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Sophomore
Osiewala finished last season second on Charleston with a 2.74 kills per game average, including having a season-high 20 kills against NJIT.

Derek Owens, Long Beach State
Former school: Jamestown
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Junior
Owens hit more than .400 in each of the last two seasons with Jamestown and as a freshman in 2021 was a NAIA Second-Team All-American and the GPAC Player of the Year.

Sotiris Siapanis, Long Beach State
Former school: Ohio State
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Sophomore
Siapanis returns to the court after missing the entire 2022 season with an injury. The Freshman All-American finished the 2021 season in the nation’s top 20 with both a 4.12 kills per game average and a .356 attack percentage. Siapanis also is a member of the Cyprus Men’s National Team.

Paul Stommel, Charleston
Former school: Limestone
Position: Setter
Class: Sophomore
Stommel was in the nation’s top 20 with a 9.67 assists per game average and guided the offense to a .268 attack percentage en route to earning First-Team All-Independent Team honors in 2022.

Arthur Sueur, Long Island
Former school: Charleston
Position: Outside attacker
Class: Graduate Student
Sueur was third on Charleston with 218 receptions last season and had a 93.6 percent successful passing rating.

Xander Thesz, Merrimack
Former school: Park-Gilbert
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Senior
Thesz finished last season averaging 3.06 kills per game and was second in the NAIA with a .385 attack percentage.

Jack Walmer, UC Santa Barbara
Former school: Hawai’i
Position: Setter
Class: Sophomore
Walmer started two matches and primarily came off the bench as a serving specialist last season, including serving the match-winning point against Long Beach State in the NCAA Tournament finals.

Rico Wardlow, Grand Canyon
Former school: Purdue Fort Wayne
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Junior
Wardlow was sixth in the nation with a .447 attack percentage and in the conference’s top 20 averaging 0.67 blocks per game as the middle attacker earned all-conference honors last season.

Zachary Weston, UC San Diego
Former school: Orange Coast College
Position: Middle attacker
Class: Sophomore
Weston finished last season with a .490 attack percentage and was fourth in the Orange Empire Conference averaging 0.89 blocks per game as the middle attacker earned first-team all-conference honors.
