Recipients unveiled for Off the Block National Weekly Awards

Off the Block announced on Monday the recipients of the National Position Player of the Week Awards and the National Freshman of the Week.

The National Position Player of the Week Awards recognize the libero, middle attacker, opposite, outside attacker and setter who had the best performances in NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball during the week. In addition, the National Player of the Week is presented to the top freshman from the week in NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball.

The Off the Block staff determines each award recipient. The winners are announced every week during the regular season on the Off the Block website, offtheblockblog.com.

While there are other weekly national awards in college men’s volleyball, these are the only position-based and freshman-based weekly awards.

Off the Block at the end of the season presents the Lloy Ball Award to the nation’s top setter, Bryan Ivie Award to the nation’s top opposite, the Karch Kiraly Award to the nation’s top outside attacker, the Ryan Millar Award to the nation’s top middle attacker and the Erik Shoji Award to the nation’s top libero. It also presents the Freshmen All-American Team at the end of the regular season.

Off the Block Weekly National Award recipients

National Setter of the Week: Jakob Thelle, Hawai’i
National Opposite of the Week: Cal Fisher, Penn State
National Outside Attacker of the Week: Christian Janke, Grand Canyon
National Middle Attacker of the Week: Guilherme Voss, Hawai’i
National Libero of the Week: Justin Lui, Stanford
National Freshman of the Week: Hilir Henno, UC Irvine

Jakob Thelle, Hawai’i
Thelle had a combined nine kills in a two-match series sweep against Loyola, including a career-high six aces in the series opener. The setter also guided the Rainbow Warriors to more than a .350 attack percentage in both matches.

Cal Fisher, Penn State
Fisher finished with a combined 15 kills on a .500 attack percentage in a two-match series sweep against BYU. The 2021 National Server of the Year also had eight aces in the series, including a match-high six aces in the series finale.

Christian Janke, Grand Canyon
Janke led all players and tied a career high with 21 kills on a .576 attack percentage in a four-game victory against McKendree on Friday. The outside attacker also had a match-high three aces and added six digs in the victory.

Guilherme Voss, Hawai’i
Voss had 10 kills and one error on a .692 attack percentage in a season-opening sweep against Loyola on Wednesday. The middle attacker also had nine kills and zero errors on a .692 attack percentage to help the Rainbow Warriors complete the two-match series sweep against the Ramblers on Friday.

Justin Lui,
Lui finished with a team-high 13 digs to help Stanford beat UC Irvine in five games on Saturday. The libero also had a combined 14 digs and one service reception error in a two-match series sweep against Lindenwood last week.

Hilir Henno, UC Irvine
Henno finished with 22 kills and a match-high 19 digs in a five-game loss to Stanford on Saturday. The outside attacker also had a match-high four aces and contributed nine kills in a season-opening week against Lindenwood on Friday.
