Initial look at MIVA Tournament quarterfinals

The college men’s volleyball postseason has arrived in the MIdwest with the start of the MIVA Tournament.

The conference tournament quarterfinals will begin Saturday. Check out matchups and the historical tidbits to know before filling out your MIVA Tournament bracket.

No. 1 seed Lewis (17-2, 12-2 MIVA) vs. No. 8 seed Quincy (5-12, 2-12 MIVA)
Match vitals:
Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois
Season series: Lewis swept both matches against Quincy during their series in March.
All-time series: Lewis leads 51-8

Next up on the bracket: The winner of this match will advance to the semifinals and play the winner of the Ball State versus Ohio State quarterfinals match.
Stats to know: The No. 1 seed has always advanced to at least MIVA Tournament semifinals during the rally scoring era. In addition, Lewis is on a 33-match winning streak against Quincy dating back to 2006. A No. 8 seed has never won in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals. Quincy also last won a MIVA Tournament match in 2011.

Stats to know: This is the first time McKendree and Purdue Fort Wayne have played each other in the postseason. A No. 6 seed or lower seed has won two MIVA Tournament matches since 2011 with McKendree being the last team to accomplish the feat in 2016. The Bearcats have never lost a home postseason match — winning its only other home match versus Ball State in the 2019 MIVA Tournament quarterfinals. Purdue Fort Wayne has not won a road match in the MIVA Tournament since beating Ohio State in the 2007 MIVA Tournament finals.

Stats to know: Ball State last beat Ohio State in the MIVA Tournament in 1997 and is on an 11-match postseason losing streak to the Buckeyes. In addition, Joel Walton in his final season as the Ball State head coach has never beaten Ohio State in the MIVA Tournament. The No. 5 seed is 3-6 against the No. 4 seed in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals since 2011, including the No. 5 seed Ohio State losing to Purdue Fort Wayne in 2014. While Ohio State typically has been the higher seed and playing at home in the quarterfinals, the Buckeyes have never won on the road in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals.
