The legion of Dave Wieczorek advocates has struck again.
The Pepperdine All-MPSF outside attacker received more than 1,000 votes in the championship round to win the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month for February.
The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month recognizes the best individual performances from NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball players during the month and gives fans from around the world the chance to determine who was the best player through online voting. It is also the only college men’s volleyball national monthly award.
Wieczorek, the two-time defending Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Fan Choice National Player of the Year, had double-digit kills all of his team’s matches during the month. Among his top February performances included a match-high 19 kills while hitting .350 in an upset victory against No. 4/4 UC Irvine on Feb. 14.
The junior also had at least three aces in five February matches and had a season-high four aces in sweep versus No. 3/3 UCLA last week.
Wieczorek received 1,122 votes and 54.02 percent of the total vote during the two-day championship round voting period. In addition, he earned almost 600 more votes than the runner-up Lincoln Memorial middle attacker Pedro Carvalho, who garnered 27.01 percent of the total vote.
Long Beach State All-American opposite Kyle Ensing finished in third place and was the only other player to get more than 10 percent of the vote.
Wieczorek, Carvalho and Ensing were three of the six finalists to advance to the championship round in the two-round format for the National Player of the Month contest.
The first round placed candidate on one of five ballots based on their position. Each winner and the runner-up from all the ballots who received the most votes qualified for the championship round.
Wieczorekin the first round won the outside attacker division with 56.11 percent of the vote.
More than 8,500 votes were cast during this National Player of the Month event.
The National Player of the Month is one of two awards solely determined by the fans. Similar to the monthly award, the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Fan Choice National Player of the Year is an annual event at the end of the season with fans deciding the winner of this 64-player bracket-style tournament through online voting.
As a National Player of the Month, Wieczorek will receive an automatic berth to the Fan Choice National Player of the Year Tournament. Wieczorek joins Grand Canyon setter Puna Kaniho, the National Player of the Month for January, as the only two players so far to earn automatic berths to the end of season tournament.
Off the Block was founded in 2011 and is the nation’s leaders in college men’s volleyball coverage. Springbak, Inc. is the official sponsor of the National Player of the Month and the Fan Choice National Player of the Year. Springbak, Inc. produces high performance footwear used by professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB and U.S. Olympic teams and the top college teams in the nation.
