King outside Sprayberry wins National Player of the Month

One of the offensive leaders in the Conference Carolinas earned enough support to win a national award.

King outside attacker Jeff Sprayberry had received 2,968 out of more than 8,000 online votes cast to win the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month for March.

The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month recognizes the best individual performances from NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball players during the month and gives fans from around the world the chance to determine who was the best player through online voting. It is also the only college men’s volleyball national monthly award.

Sprayberry had double-digit kills in nine matches during March, including a season-high 29 kills on a .338 attack percentage in a five-game victory against Belmont Abbey on March 7. In addition, the sophomore finished the month with more than 20 kills in three matches.

Sprayberry earned almost 1,250 more votes than second-place CSUN outside attacker Dimitar Kalchev. Both Kalchev and Sprayberry were the only players among the 30 finalists to receive at least 20 percent of the total vote.

McKendree middle attacker Wyatt Patterson finished in third place with more than 1,000 votes and about 13 percent of the total vote.

The National Player of the Month is one of two awards solely determined by the fans. Similar to the monthly award, the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Fan Choice National Player of the Year is an annual event at the end of the season with fans deciding the winner of this 64-player bracket-style tournament through online voting.

Sprayberry as a National Player of the Month winner will receive an automatic berth to the Fan Choice National Player of the Year Tournament. The other National Player of the Month winners this season to receive automatic berths are Mount Olive setter Jeff Yasalonis and Coker opposite Artur Cabral.
