Pan Am Games volleyball match to follow today: USA vs. Canada

One day after rallying to win its group-play opener, the United States has a chance Tuesday to clinch a spot in the Pan American Games quarterfinals.

The U.S. Men’s Volleyball Pan American Games Team will continue group play at the international tournament with a match against Canada on Tuesday in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The United States enters the second of its three group-play matches in second place in Group B. The first-place team in each of the two groups will receive a bye into the semifinals, while the second and third place teams will compete in the quarterfinals.

What to know: The United States will play Canada with a chance to advance beyond the group-play round and remain eligible for the bye into the semifinals. The United States overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Puerto Rico in five games in its group-play opener Monday. USC All-American outside attacker Tony Ciarelli and U.S. Men’s National Team outside attacker Evan Patak both led the United States with 18 kills in the victory. Canada enters today’s match after losing in three games to Brazil in its group-play opener. Outside attacker Spencer Leiske had a team-high nine kills and was one of two Canadian players with more than two kills in the loss. If Canada loses to the United States it will have to win its group-play finale against Puerto Rico to advance to the quarterfinals.
