Highlights: Pepperdine prevails in #CincoSets over Princeton in NCAA opening round

No. 3/3 Pepperdine defeated No. 13 Princeton in #CincoSets, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-8, in an NCAA Championships opening-round match on Tuesday in Long Beach.

Pepperdine outhit Princeton, .318 to .209, and outblocked them, 14 to 6.5. In the fifth game alone, the Waves sided-out at a .889 rate and attacked at a dominant .667 clip.

Pepperdine outside hitter David Wieczorek had a team-high 18 kills along with eight digs, and five blocks. Middle attacker Max Chamberlain had a career-high 10 kills and a season-high nine blocks.

Princeton was led by outside attacker Kendall Ratter who had a match-high and season-high 24 kills.

Highlights: Lewis block too much for USC in NCAA opening round

Lewis outside attacker Ryan Coenen had 18 kills, 11 digs and 5 blocks to lead No. 6/8 Lewis past No. 4/5 USC, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23, in an opening round match of the 2019 NCAA Championship on Tuesday in Long Beach.

Lewis outhit USC, .289 to .238, and outblocked then, 17.5 to 9.  The Trojans had 20 serving errors, while the Flyers had just 11. Middle attacker TJ Murray had 10 blocks while libero Michael Simmons had 17 digs.

Outside attacker Gianluca Grasso had 16 kills for USC, while opposite Ryan Moss added 15 kills and 11 digs and outside attacker Jack Wyett had 15 kills and 8 digs.

Pepperdine won both MPSF regular season and tournament and will face Princeton, winner of the play-in match, on Tuesday in the opening round of the NCAA Championship. USC fulfilled their season-long mantra of resurgence by earning one of the two at-large bids to the NCAA men’s volleyball tournament. Troy earned their first trip to the Championship since 2012 after going undefeated at home, highlighted by defeating then No. 1 Long Beach State. The Trojans placed two players on the MPSF First Team in opposite Ryan Moss and outside attacker Jack Wyett. The Trojans take on MIVA Champions Lewis in the first opening round match on Tuesday.
