Long Beach State climbs to No. 1 in new national media poll

There is a new team atop the media poll for the first time this season.

Long Beach State received all but four first-place votes to surpass Ohio State for the No. 1 ranking in the new Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Media Poll that was released Tuesday.

The 49ers since losing to the Buckeyes in February have won 16 of their last 17 matches. In addition, Long Beach State can clinch its first MPSF regular season title in almost a decade if it wins its regular season finale.

Ohio State’s first drop in the media poll this season comes after it suffered a five-game loss to Penn State last week.

Along with Ohio State and Long Beach State, the remaining top five of the media poll stays unchanged with BYU at No. 3, Hawai’i at No. 4 and UC Irvine at No. 5.

The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Media Poll is the only rankings in NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball solely determined by media members. The 10 teams receiving the most votes are ranked in the National Media Poll, while other schools earning votes but finishing outside of the top 10 are considered teams receiving votes.

Off the Block is a website that started in January 2011 and has become the nation’s leader in college men’s volleyball coverage. Springbak, Inc. is the official sponsor of the National Media Poll and produces high performance footwear used by professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB and U.S. Olympic teams and the top college teams in the nation.
