In a match-up between two of the nation’s top sophomore setters, Jonah Seif came up big late to help UC Santa Barbara pull off the upset.
Seif had back-to-back blocks on the final two plays of the decisive fifth game as No. 9 UC Santa Barbara defeated No. 1 Stanford 25-13, 25-21, 12-25, 25-23, 15-12 on Saturday in Santa Barbara, Calif.
It’s a short turnaround tonight in college men’s volleyball for several teams following lengthy conference matches less than 24 hours ago.
No. 1 Stanford and No. 7 UC Irvine will both attempt to rebound from losing a five-game conference match on Friday to a top-10 nationally ranked team. In addition, out in the Midwest No. 2 Loyola looks to make its case for No. 1 in the national rankings as it plays host to Mount Olive.
It’s all about the rematch tonight in college men’s volleyball.
No. 8 BYU and No. 7 UC Irvine will play each other for the first time since their meeting in the 2013 NCAA finals. In addition, No. 1 Stanford will travel to play No. 6 UCLA in a rematch of the two teams’ season-opener earlier this month
The MIVA and EIVA has a chance to make an even bigger statement with several marquee non-conference matches tonight.
No. 7 Loyola will attempt to get its third victory against a nationally ranked team in as many night as it plays host to No. 11 USC. In addition, Harvard will play No. 4 Long Beach State with the UC Santa Barbara Invitational championship on the line.

After an eight-month wait, the first weekend to the college men’s volleyball season is finally here.
The first weekend of the regular season begins with a marquee match-up as No. 3 BYU travels to take on No. 7 Loyola. In addition, out in the West Coast the UC Santa Barbara Invitational starts with exhibition pool-play matches.
The start to the college men’s volleyball season is still a few weeks away, but teams are already beginning the process of trying to fill their stands for the upcoming season.
While a majority of college men’s volleyball teams do not charge admission for regular season matches, several teams that do charge admission have released their season-ticket and single-match ticket options.

Sixteen college men’s volleyball players have been selected to the 2014 watch list for a new national award.
Off the Block on Tuesday afternoon unveiled its watch list for the inaugural Lloy Ball Award.
A former outside attacker who helped UC Santa Barbara win the program’s last MPSF championship and reach the NCAA Tournament will return to the Gauchos’ sidelines.
UC Santa Barbara coach Rick McLaughlin announced Thursday that the school hired Cullen Irons to be an assistant coach for the 2013 season.

So much for a quiet off-season summer in college men’s volleyball.
The last three months produced everything from the announcement of what conferences will have to participate in the new NCAA Tournament play-in match to schools scheduling big non-conference matches for the upcoming season. Check out the top 10 college men’s volleyball storylines from the summer.
The UC Santa Barbara Invitational on its 40th anniversary will have a revamped look for the 2014 season.
UC Santa Barbara coach Rick McLaughlin said Wednesday that the annual non-conference tournament will undergo numerous format changes for the upcoming season including adding a pool-play round and decreasing the matches counting towards a team’s overall season record.
