    With the NCAA men’s volleyball season starting this week, there are numerous candidates who could be the 2012 AVCA Player of the Year this season.

  • BYU ranked No. 1 in preseason national media poll

    BYU will open the season No. 1 in the men’s volleyball national media poll.

    The Cougars received six of 10 first-place votes to be ranked No. 1 in the newest Volleyball Magazine Men’s Division I-II Top 10 Poll that was released Wednesday morning.

  • Projected preseason top 10 national rankings: No. 5 Stanford

    Stanford is projected by Off the Block to be No. 5 in the preseason national rankings.

    Off the Block throughout December will reveal its projected men’s volleyball preseason top 10 national rankings and will profile a top-10 team each day. The Off the Block projected preseason rankings were created independently of the AVCA Coaches Poll and the Volleyball Magazine Top 10 Media Poll.

    The college men’s volleyball season begins on Jan. 3 and concludes with the Final Four in May.

  • BYU projected to win MPSF in conference preseason poll

    BYU one year after finishing in second place in the MPSF is now projected to win the conference this upcoming season.

    The Cougars received six of 12 first-place votes and finished in first place in the MPSF Preseason Coaches’ Poll that was released Wednesday.

  • 2012 Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams released

    A nationwide voting committee selected 21 players to the Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams.

    The Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams recognizes the Division I-II men’s volleyball players projected to be the best in the nation during the upcoming season. Ten players were selected as Preseason First-Team All-Americans and 11 players were named Preseason Second-Team All-Americans.

  • Penn State, Stanford ranked toughest non-conference schedules

    Penn State will play the toughest non-conference schedule this upcoming season, according to a college men’s volleyball ranking system.

    The Nittany Lions have the hardest schedule in the Off the Block Relative Strength Factor Non-conference Preseason Rankings that were released Wednesday.

  • 2 sons of Hall of Famers in Stanford’s newest recruiting class

    Two setters who are sons of Hall of Famers will join Stanford for the 2013 season.

    Stanford coach John Kosty announced Thursday that setters Joe Ctvrtlik and James Shaw were among the four high school seniors to sign Letters of National Intent to play for the Cardinal.

  • Stanford releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    A rematch against Long Beach State and non-conference matches against the top MIVA and EIVA teams highlights the 2012 Stanford regular season schedule that the team released Tuesday.

    The Cardinal ended the 2011 regular season No. 3 in the national rankings but was upset in the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals and missed the Final Four. Stanford has six returning starters, including All-American outside attacker Brad Lawson.

  • Long Beach State vs. Stanford rematch highlights preseason tourney

    Six months after Long Beach State upset Stanford in the conference tournament, the two teams will have a preseason rematch.

    Long Beach State and Stanford will play a full best-of-five game exhibition match Saturday at the Walter Pyramid as part of the preseason LBSU Fall Tournament.

    “It is 100 percent exhibition matches this weekend and they don’t go on our record, but you ask any of our players and they want to win them too,” Long Beach State interim head coach Andy Read said.

  • Northridge, UCLA cap strong preseason start at USC Fall Invite

    After finishing last season tied for last place in the MPSF, Cal State Northridge opened its preseason undefeated at the USC Fall Invitational.

    The Matadors won all four of their matches Saturday to end the two-day preseason tournament 6-0 — the only team to finish undefeated.

    Cal State Northridge defeated three teams that reached the 2011 MPSF Tournament, including the host team USC. In addition, freshman outside attacker Julius Hoefer had match-high 17 kills in a victory against Lewis.
