A record-setting night of five-game matches and several top-five nationally ranked teams picking up critical conference victories highlighted the last few days of college men’s volleyball.

Outside attacker Josh Taylor came through when No. 3 Pepperdine need him the most and helped the team knock-off No. 4 BYU.
Taylor in the decisive fifth game led all players with five kills and added two blocks and an ace as Pepperdine defeated BYU 25-19, 17-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-11 on Friday in Malibu, Calif.

Off the Block on the final Thursday of each month during the college men’s volleyball regular season will showcase several match highlights and stories from the past in an effort to help preserve the sport’s history.

There are critical early-season conference matches from coast-to-coast tonight in college men’s volleyball.
No. 1 Pepperdine and No. 5 BYU will attempt to stay undefeated in the MPSF as they both play top-10 nationally ranked teams. In addition, not to be overlooked on the East Coast is a match-up between Mount Olive and Limestone, two of the preseason favorites to represent the Conference Carolinas in the NCAA Tournament.
Being ranked No. 1 in the nation just isn’t that big of a deal for Pepperdine.
Pepperdine coach Marv Dunphy said in an interview with Off the Block earlier this week that while his team is happy to be atop the national rankings for the first time in four years it’s more focused on the big picture and being the best team at the end of the season.
A team from the MIVA for the time in recent history earned the top spot in the national media poll.
Loyola received three first-place votes and jumped up one spot to No. 1 in the new Volleyball Magazine national media poll released Tuesday morning.

No. 9 Lewis less than one week after upsetting BYU will now try to beat another MPSF school as it travels out to the a West Coast to play No. 5 Stanford. In addition, the Outrigger Invitational continues with No. 10 Penn State playing Hawai’i in the late-night match.
