  • VIDEO: Petty brothers lead No. 7 Lewis to upset No. 5 Penn State

    The Petty brother combination at outside attacker came up big for Lewis in one of the team’s biggest home matches of the season.

    Freshman Greg Petty had a team-high 14 kills and junior Jay Petty had 13 kills as No. 7 Lewis upset No. 5 Penn State 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20 on Saturday in Romeoville, Ill.

    The Flyers (4-2, 0-0 MIVA) playing in its home opener out-hit the Nittany Lions (2-1, 0-0 EIVA) .429 to .213. Lewis also had more than a .400 attack percentage in the final three games, including hitting .524 in the third game.

  • My men’s volleyball media poll ballot

    For the second straight week there is a new No. 1 in the men’s volleyball national media poll.

    BYU’s two victories against then-No. 1 UC Irvine was enough to move the Cougars back to No. 1 after a one-week absence from the top spot in the rankings. Despite the two losses, UC Irvine didn’t fall far the top and finished at No. 2.

  • Top 5 storylines to follow at the Outrigger Invitational

    There are more than enough intriguing storylines this year for one of the oldest and most prestigious non-conference tournaments in NCAA men’s volleyball history.

    Hawai’i, No. 9 Lewis, Springfield and No. 3 UCLA will begin play today at the three-day Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu. Each team will play each other once in tournament’s round-robin format and will conclude with a nationally televised match between UCLA and the host school Hawai’i.

  • Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

    And just in case you didn’t get enough top 10 teams play each other Friday, there are more of these matches today.

    Seven of the top 10 ranked teams will be in action Saturday. Highlighting these matches is battle between the two undefeated teams — No. 2 BYU and No. 3 UC Irvine — in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational championship match.

  • Loyola projected over Ohio State to win MIVA championship in 2012

    Loyola is favored over the defending NCAA champions Ohio State to win the MIVA this upcoming season.

    Loyola received 45 votes, including four of seven first-place votes, to be ranked No. 1 in the MIVA Preseason Coaches Poll that was released Thursday.

  • Four dark horse teams that could crash the 2012 Final Four

    Everyone loves an underdog story during the postseason — especially when you’ve been saying since the start of the year that it was the team to watch.

    With the regular season set to start this week, there are the likely favorites to reach the Final Four. BYU, UC Irvine, Stanford and UCLA are the favorites from the MPSF, while Ohio State and Loyola are favorites in the MIVA and Penn State is the favorite in the EIVA.

    However, there are several dark horse teams from each conference that could crash the Final Four this year.

  • 2012 Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams released

    A nationwide voting committee selected 21 players to the Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams.

    The Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams recognizes the Division I-II men’s volleyball players projected to be the best in the nation during the upcoming season. Ten players were selected as Preseason First-Team All-Americans and 11 players were named Preseason Second-Team All-Americans.

  • Hawai’i releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    A difficult six-week conference stretch and playing host to its annual Outrigger Invitational highlights the 2012 Hawai’i regular season schedule that the team released Monday.

    Hawai’i finished last season in fifth place in the MPSF and lost in the first round of the conference tournament. The Warriors return four starters for the upcoming season and also have incoming freshman outside attacker JP Marks, who played for the Germany Junior and Youth National teams.

  • Pepperdine releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    A rematch between two Hall of Fame coaches and non-conference matches against Lewis and Penn State highlights the 2012 Pepperdine regular season schedule that the team released Saturday.

    Pepperdine finished last season in ninth place in the MPSF and missed the conference tournament for the first time in its program history. The Waves have five returning starters, including outside attacker Maurice Torres who ended 2011 in the nation’s top 10 for kills per game average.
